Botswana joined the African Union (formerly the Organisation of African Unity) on 31 October 1966 and is a party to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.
In addition to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, Botswana is also a party to additional regional treaties between African Union member states, but is not a party to the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa.
