Overview

This section provides a very brief overview of how to find laws and cases from countries other than the United States and includes a few countries that are subjects of clinic projects as examples. For more detailed guidance on how to find foreign legal materials, please see the Foreign Legal Research Guide

Malawi

The Republic of Malawi is located in southeastern Africa. Malawi has a mixed legal system of English common law and customary law. Although English is the official language, the major spoken languages include Chichewa (common, unofficial national language), Chinyanja, Chiyao, and Chitumbuka.

Legal materials from Malawi can be found using free resources, including MalawiLII. Laws and cases from Malawi are not available on Westlaw or Lexis. 

Mexico

Mexico is located in North America and is a Member State of the Organization of American States (OAS). Spanish is the official language of the government.

Legal materials from Mexico can be found using free databases, government websites, and AsianLII. Although Lexis provides some access to cases from Mexico through its Jurisprudencia de la Corte Supreme de Mexico - Mexican Caselaw section, this has not been updated since 2004, so using the resources below would be better for your research.

Myanmar

Myanmar (formerly Burma) is located in southeast Asia. Myanmar has a mixed legal system of English common law and customary law. The official language is Burmese, but English was the official language during the colonial period.
