Below are the generative AI tools offered to law schools by Westlaw, Lexis+ AI, and Bloomberg Law, as well as notes about upcoming features and tools not currently available to law schools that you may encounter elsewhere.
This page will be updated on an ongoing basis--the information below is current as of October 2024.
CoCounsel’s Research skill, in the early access program for law school faculty, is limited to using the “Search and Summarize Practical Law” generative AI tool. (CoCounsel’s Westlaw AI-Assisted Research skill will launch in January and will permit conversational language research queries. The Databases skill permits users to upload files to create and search custom databases. The Review skill allows users to upload files, review documents to answer specific questions, and compare documents, such as contracts. The Summarize skill allows users to request to have documents (like cases, legislation, or reports) summarized. This can also be used to provide a chronological timeline of events summarized from selected files. Lastly, the Draft skill can be used to draft documents, like correspondence or memoranda.
Another generative AI tool from Lexis that is not available to law schools or students, but that you may encounter in other employment settings, is LexisNexis Protégé. The main difference between the AI Assistant available to law schools and LexisNexis Protégé is the latter's personalization capabilities. There are currently no plans to offer LexisNexis Protégé to law schools.
The following generative AI tools are currently in development at Bloomberg Law:
(1) Bloomberg Law Answers Powered by Generative Al: When running a search, this feature will generate an answer or summary to the question or keyword utilizing Bloomberg Law resources. From the answer, you can access the documents used to generate the answer and see the exact section identified as most relevant.
(2) AI Assistant: AI chat assistant answers legal questions from case law, compares laws across multiple jurisdictions, summarizes and answers questions on opinions and statutes, and directs you to tools and topic pages across the site.
