Government Structure

The Eastern Republic of Uruguay is a constitutional republic with a democratically elected president and a bicameral legislature (Senate and a Chamber of Deputies). Uruguay has a a Civil Law system, based on the principles of the Spanish civil code. The Supreme Court is elected by the legislature, and nominates all other justices.

 

National Language

Spanish is the official language of Uruguay. Most legal materials are available only in Spanish.
