Spain: International Team Project

Government Structure

Spain is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy. Spain follows a Civil Law system.

The prime minister is the head of government and the monarch is the head of state. A council of ministers is the executive branch and is presided over by the prime minister.

Spain is a unitary state, composed of 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities with varying degrees of autonomy.

The map shows Spain and surrounding countries with international borders, the national capital Madrid, autonomous communities and provinces and their capitals, major cities, main roads, railroads, and major airports (without the Canary Islands).

National Language

The official language in Spain is Spanish or Castilian Spanish, which is spoken by all citizens. However, certain Autonomous Communities have their own official language in addition to Spanish. Catalan is spoken in Catalonia, Galician in Galicia, and Basque in the Basque Country and part of Navarre. The Balearic Islands and Valencia also have their own official languages.
